Many people want to use Claude without opening a browser, logging into a website, and waiting for the web app to load every time.
There is another practical issue: browser-based chat history is tied to the web app account and environment. If you want a local desktop client, local chat storage, easier exports, and quick switching between Claude, GPT, DeepSeek, Gemini, or local models, a dedicated client is often more convenient.
Chatbox solves that problem.
It is an AI chat client available on desktop, mobile, and web. You can connect multiple model providers, keep conversations locally, and use Claude through an API endpoint instead of relying only on a browser session.
This guide shows how to configure Chatbox with Claude API access through apito.ai. No coding is required.
What is Chatbox?
Chatbox is an AI chat client designed around one idea:
One interface for multiple AI models.
One interface for multiple AI models.
Instead of using one app for Claude, another for GPT, and another for local models, you can manage them from one client and switch models from the UI.
Core features:
- Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and web support
- local conversation storage
- multiple model providers
- custom API endpoint support
- open-source community edition
- export and import options for chat records
Compared with using Claude only in the browser:
| Dimension | Claude web app | Chatbox + Claude API |
|---|---|---|
| Chat history | Stored in the provider’s web environment | Stored locally in Chatbox |
| Model switching | Claude-focused | Claude, GPT, DeepSeek, Gemini, local models, and more |
| API endpoint | Not user-configurable | Custom API host supported |
| Cost model | Subscription or web-plan based | API usage based |
| Local archive | Limited | Export to Markdown or JSON |
| Offline access | Web app requires service access | Existing local history can be viewed |
If you use Claude occasionally, the web app may be enough.
If you use AI daily, switch between models, or want local records, Chatbox is a better fit.
Step 1: Download Chatbox
Visit the official website:
Choose the version for your device:
- Windows: download the
.exeinstaller - macOS: choose Intel or Apple Silicon, then drag the app into Applications
- Linux: use the AppImage or
.debpackage - iOS: install from the App Store
- Android: download from the official website or install from Google Play where available
- Web: open web.chatboxai.app
After installation, open Chatbox. You should see a clean chat interface with the conversation list on the left and the active chat area on the right.

On some Android devices, third-party APK installation may require disabling vendor-specific strict installation modes before installing the APK.
Step 2: Get a Claude API key from apito.ai
Chatbox is only the client. To use Claude, you need API access.
This guide uses apito.ai as the Claude API access layer.
Why use apito.ai?
For users who cannot easily access Anthropic’s official API directly, common issues include payment, network stability, and endpoint access.
apito.ai is an independent third-party Claude API access service. It provides a Claude-compatible access layer and supports custom API host configuration in tools such as Chatbox.
Use the following as the working configuration for this guide:
API Host / Base URL: https://gw.apito.ai
API Host / Base URL: https://gw.apito.ai
Available models, pricing, quotas, and routing behavior should always follow the live apito.ai console.
Create and copy your key
- Visit apito.ai
- Create an account
- Open the console
- Create a new API key

Copy the key from the key list.

You will need two values:
API Key: your copied apito.ai key
API Host: https://gw.apito.ai
API Key: your copied apito.ai key
API Host: https://gw.apito.ai
Step 3: Configure Chatbox on desktop
The Windows and macOS flows are similar.
1. Open Settings
Launch Chatbox and click the gear icon in the lower-left corner.
If this is your first launch, choose the option to use your own API key or local model.
2. Choose the provider
In the model provider list, choose Claude if your Chatbox version provides a Claude API option.
If your version does not show a dedicated Claude option, choose an OpenAI-compatible or custom API provider and set the API format according to the options available in your Chatbox version.
Chatbox versions change over time, so the exact labels may differ. The important fields are the API key, API host, and model name.
3. Fill in API settings
Use the following values:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| API Key | Your apito.ai API key |
| API Host / Base URL | https://gw.apito.ai |
| Model | A Claude model available in your apito.ai console |

Do not add /v1 manually unless your Chatbox version explicitly requires it. In the screenshot from the source draft, Chatbox previews the final request path after the API host is entered.
4. Choose a model
Chatbox supports manual model names and may also support fetching available models from the API.
Examples shown in the source draft include:
| Model name | Positioning | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
claude-sonnet-4-6 |
General-purpose | Daily chat, writing, coding |
claude-opus-4-7 |
Higher reasoning | Code review, technical analysis |
claude-haiku-4-5 |
Fast and lightweight | Short Q&A, simple tasks |
claude-sonnet-5 |
Balanced newer model | Daily work, writing, coding |
claude-opus-5 |
Flagship reasoning | Complex reasoning, long documents |
Treat this as an example list for apito.ai users. The exact models available to your account should be checked in the apito.ai console.
If you are unsure, start with the default or recommended Sonnet model shown in your console.

5. Save and test
Click Save, then use Chatbox’s connection test button if available.
If configured correctly, Chatbox should show a successful connection test for basic text requests.

Return to the main chat page, start a new conversation, and send:
Hello
Hello
If Claude replies, the setup is complete.

You can switch models from the selector at the bottom of the chat interface.
Mobile setup: iOS and Android
Mobile setup is similar to desktop.
iOS
- Install Chatbox from the App Store.
- Open the app.
- Open Settings.
- Go to model providers.
- Choose Claude API or the compatible custom provider option.
- Enter your apito.ai API key.
- Enter
https://gw.apito.aias the API host. - Choose or enter a model name.
- Save and test.
Android
- Install Chatbox from the official website or Google Play where available.
- If installing an APK, allow third-party installation if your phone blocks it.
- Open Settings.
- Go to model providers.
- Choose Claude API or the compatible custom provider option.

- Save and test.
Mobile notes:
- Mobile Chatbox uses remote APIs for Claude.
- Use Wi-Fi if you plan to send long prompts or images.
- Mobile network usage may consume additional data.
Web version setup
If you do not want to install an app, use the web version:
Steps:
- Open the web app.
- Choose the option to use your own API key.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Claude API or a compatible custom provider.
- Enter your apito.ai API key.
- Enter

- Save and test.
The web version is useful for temporary use. Keep in mind that browser storage can be cleared, so export important conversations if needed.
Troubleshooting
401 Unauthorized
Cause:
- the API key is incorrect
- the key has expired
- the key belongs to a different provider
Fix:
- copy the key again from apito.ai
- check for extra spaces
- confirm the key is active
- confirm the API host and key come from the same provider
404 Not Found
Cause:
- wrong API host
- duplicate
/v1path - trailing path mismatch
Fix:
Use:
https://gw.apito.ai
https://gw.apito.ai
Do not manually append /v1 unless your Chatbox version specifically asks for it.
429 Too Many Requests
Cause:
- request rate limit
- too many rapid messages
- quota or concurrency limits
Fix:
- slow down requests
- check usage and rate limits in the apito.ai console
- reduce parallel requests
- contact support if your workflow needs higher limits
Timeout or connection failure
Cause:
- local network issue
- firewall or proxy blocking Chatbox
- unstable connection
Fix:
- test another network
- check firewall permissions
- try a mobile hotspot
- confirm the API host is reachable
Model name not recognized
Cause:
- model name typo
- model not enabled for your account
- provider-side model naming changed
Fix:
- copy the model name from the apito.ai console
- preserve hyphens and casing
- use Chatbox’s fetch-model feature if available
Advanced tips
Set a system prompt
Chatbox lets you set a system prompt for a conversation. This is useful when you want Claude to answer in a consistent style.
Example:
You are a technical documentation editor.
When answering:
1. Use concise, clear English.
2. Wrap code examples in Markdown code blocks.
3. Briefly explain technical terms when they first appear.

Adjust temperature
Temperature controls randomness:
| Temperature | Best for |
|---|---|
| 0-0.3 | Code, extraction, deterministic analysis |
| 0.4-0.7 | Daily chat, writing, balanced answers |
| 0.8-1.0 | Brainstorming and creative writing |
For daily use, 0.7 is a reasonable starting point.

Configure multiple providers
Chatbox can manage multiple model providers. You can configure Claude API, GPT-compatible APIs, local models, or other services, then switch models from the UI.

Export chat history
Because Chatbox stores conversations locally, exporting matters.
Common export formats include:
- Markdown for reading and archiving
- JSON for migration and backup

Use prompt templates
If you often reuse the same prompt, save it as a shortcut or prompt template.
Example weekly report template:
Generate a weekly report from the following notes:
1. Work completed this week
2. Problems encountered
3. Plan for next week
Format:
- three sections
- 3-5 bullets per section
- concise language
Generate a weekly report from the following notes:
1. Work completed this week
2. Problems encountered
3. Plan for next week
Format:
- three sections
- 3-5 bullets per section
- concise language
This reduces repetitive typing and keeps output structure stable.
Summary
The setup has three steps:
- Download Chatbox from chatboxai.app.
- Create an API key on apito.ai.
- In Chatbox, set the API key and API host:
https://gw.apito.ai
https://gw.apito.ai
This setup is useful if you want:
- a desktop or mobile Claude client
- local conversation records
- multiple model providers in one interface
- API-based usage instead of only browser-based access
- flexible exports and backups
Chatbox handles the client experience. apito.ai handles the Claude API access layer. Model availability, pricing, quotas, and API behavior should always follow the live apito.ai console.
